Tragedy on Highway 20

A man from Willits died Sunday afternoon in a head-on collision on Highway 20 near Upper Lake. The accident occurred when his Toyota Corolla lost control and collided with a GMC Sierra pickup truck. The name of the 58-year-old man has not been released pending notification of his family. CHP reported that the crash occurred around 12:53 p.m. on Highway 20 east of Blue Lakes Road. Officers Jaxin Gallagher and Brian Hanson were dispatched to the scene of the accident. The red Toyota Corolla was traveling eastbound and had lost control in a curved section of the highway, crossing into the opposite lane where it collided with the black GMC Sierra driven by 83-year-old John Leone of Upper Lake. John Leone and his passenger, Elizabeth Leone, were transported to Sutter Lakeside Hospital with suspected minor injuries. The Toyota driver died at the scene, along with two dogs that were in the vehicle. All occupants of the vehicles were wearing seat belts, and airbags deployed in both vehicles. Alcohol or drugs are not suspected to have been a factor, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation. Responding to the accident scene, in addition to CHP, were Caltrans, Lake County Sheriff's Office, Northshore Fire Department, and All in One Towing. Highway 20 was open to controlled one-way traffic during the incident, according to CHP reports.
