Tragedy in Humboldt

On March 5, 2024, at approximately 7:51 p.m., the Humboldt County Communications Center (HCC) received a report of a vehicle fire with individuals trapped in the vehicle at the intersection of Singley Road and Singley Hill Road. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and determined that a 2001 Nissan Frontier and a 2017 Freightliner semi-truck, towing empty double flatbed trailers, had collided. The impact caused the Nissan to catch fire with two occupants trapped inside the vehicle. The truck driver, 20-year-old Logan Morais of McKinleyville, emerged unharmed and, with the help of a bystander, extricated 65-year-old Guadalupe Ramirez of Fortuna from the burning Nissan. Mr. Ramirez sustained serious injuries as a result of this crash and was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka. Unfortunately, 16-year-old Daniel Ramirez, also a resident of Fortuna, remained trapped inside the Nissan, where he succumbed to his injuries. Drug and alcohol use by Mr. Morais was ruled out at the scene. The seating positions and whether substance use was a factor for the Nissan occupants remain under investigation. The Humboldt Area Office of the California Highway Patrol wishes to thank the Loleta Fire Department, City Ambulance of Eureka, Cal Trans, the Bear River Tribe Police Department, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, the Fortuna Police Department, the Ferndale Police Department, and all other agencies that assisted with the investigation at the scene of this incident. We extend our deepest condolences to all affected by this crash. As we continue our investigation, we ask anyone with information to contact the California Highway Patrol at (707) 822-5981.
