In a tragic incident in South Los Angeles, a fatal accident occurred involving the rollover of a tanker truck on the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway at Manchester Boulevard, leading to the spillage of between 500 to 1,000 gallons of aviation fuel. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported the accident on Sunday, following the event that took place at 10:55 p.m. Saturday.
Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders discovered one individual deceased beneath the overturned tanker, as confirmed by LAFD spokesperson Margaret Stewart. The tanker's driver managed to reach a hospital via a private vehicle and did not interact with LAFD personnel at the scene. Additionally, a 30-year-old woman was transported to the hospital by paramedics, suffering from minor injuries.
Efforts to mitigate the situation included firefighters utilizing a redwood plug to halt a leak in the tanker, which still contained an estimated 8,000 gallons of aviation fuel. To address the fuel hazard, LAFD personnel collaborated with Caltrans in deploying absorbent materials.
The operation to safely remove the fuel involved drilling four holes into the tanker, facilitated by the truck company's owner. Subsequent to stabilizing the tanker, private wrecking services worked to upright and ready the tank trailer for removal. Firefighters were also tasked with extracting the deceased victim and aiding the L.A. County Medical Examiner's office in the body's recovery.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert, temporarily closing both northbound and southbound lanes of the Harbor (110) Freeway at Manchester Boulevard. The southbound lanes reopened at 7 a.m., with the northbound lanes following at 12:20 p.m., as stated by the CHP.
