Collision in Byron
A tragic incident unfolded in eastern Contra Costa County on Saturday, resulting in one fatality and two individuals sustaining injuries. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the devastating head-on collision occurred around 6:25 p.m. when a white Chevrolet Silverado, traveling north on Byron Highway near Clifton Court Road, veered into oncoming traffic.
The collision was between the Chevrolet Silverado and a southbound grey Kia sedan. The driver of the Kia, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, tragically lost their life at the scene, as confirmed by the authorities.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado suffered injuries and was airlifted to John Muir Health Walnut Creek Medical Center, while a passenger in the Chevrolet, also injured, was transported by ambulance to John Muir Walnut Creek.
Additionally, a Hyundai Elantra traveling south behind the Kia sustained minor damage from road debris, with no injuries reported to the driver or passenger. Furthermore, a northbound Hummer, following the Chevrolet, also encountered debris and possibly collided with the Chevrolet after the initial crash, causing minor damage. Fortunately, neither the Hummer's driver nor a minor passenger suffered any injuries.
The investigation into this tragic incident revealed that the deceased driver was not wearing their seatbelt correctly, and driving under the influence was ruled out as a contributing factor.
The CHP has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and urges anyone who witnessed the event or events leading up to it to come forward with information.
