Accident in Merced County

A cell phone video shows flames on the side of Highway 99 in the early hours of Thanksgiving in Merced County.

The California Highway Patrol reported that two people died as a result of this car accident. A 22-year-old from Modesto was driving a Hyundai in the opposite lane of the highway.

“We had reports, multiple reports of a wrong-way driver traveling in the north and southbound lanes of Route 99,” said CHP officer Eric Zuniga.

The CHP said he drove approximately two miles before colliding with another vehicle. The SUV he collided with rolled over and caught fire.

A SKYVIEW 30 video shows the scene and the intensity of the flames.

The 22-year-old driving the wrong way and a 30-year-old woman who was the front passenger in the SUV died as a result of the crash.

The other passengers in the SUV were taken to a trauma center in Modesto with serious and minor injuries, but all are expected to be okay.

The CHP is currently in a maximum enforcement period, with additional officers on the roads, ensuring that people stay safe. The additional enforcement started Wednesday night and is expected to end at midnight on Monday.

As the holiday weekend continues, Officer Eric Zuniga encourages everyone to do their best to stay safe on the road.

The crash is still under investigation.
