Tragedy in Desert Hot Springs, Riverside County

The community members were in a state of shock on Thursday over the death of a 9-year-old boy who sustained serious injuries in a car accident and passed away in a hospital earlier this week.

"With heavy hearts, we share the tragic loss of one of our family members in PSUSD, Ian Villalobos, who died following a car accident earlier this week," wrote officials from the Palm Springs Unified School District in a statement. "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Ian's family and his Bella Vista Elementary School family."

The boy's mother, Sandra Villalobos, created a GoFundMe page at gofund.me/24f2e7ab to raise funds for her son's funeral and medical expenses.

"Sadly, he lost his life after a sudden car accident," she wrote on the page, which had raised over $2,000 by Thursday afternoon.

The San Bernardino County Coroner's Office reported that the child died on Tuesday at Loma Linda University Medical Center after being injured in Desert Hot Springs.

The crash occurred around 2:50 p.m. on Monday in the area of Palm Drive and Yucca Drive, according to the Desert Hot Springs Police Department.

An 81-year-old resident of Sky Valley was driving a northbound Subaru SUV on Palm Drive and veered into the southbound lane, colliding with a black Toyota van, the police said. The Toyota was occupied by a 37-year-old resident of La Quinta and the child as a passenger, who suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The Major Investigation Team of the Desert Hot Springs Police Department was investigating the collision.

No additional information was immediately available about the accident.
