California Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol on Friday.

Jail records indicate that Carrillo, who is also running for Los Angeles City Council in District 14, was arrested on Friday morning around 1:35 a.m.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Carrillo was detained in the 6200 block of Monterey Road in Montecito Heights after officers responded to a report of a traffic accident.

Citing law enforcement sources, the Los Angeles Times reported that two vehicles were struck by a third vehicle allegedly driven by Carrillo, who had a "high blood alcohol content."

43-year-old Carrillo was arrested and booked at LAPD Detention Center.

The State Assemblywoman has represented District 52 in the California Legislature since 2017. That area encompasses Echo Park, Highland Park, Eagle Rock, the southern part of Glendale, and Montecito Heights, where the arrest occurred.

Carrillo is one of over a dozen candidates who have formally entered the race for City Council District 14 of Los Angeles. Currently, that position is held by controversial councilman Kevin de León, who is seeking re-election.

A witness whose car was allegedly damaged by Carrillo recalls the incident saying, "I had both balcony doors open and I heard a loud bang and screech."

The witness, who did not want to be identified, continued to say, "She hit a car, I believe, which then collided with my car that was in front of it."

The witness said that Carrillo appeared very disoriented.

"When she started speaking to me, there was a very strong smell of alcohol," the witness said. "She was staggering, so we called the paramedics, 911, because the airbags were deployed."

In a statement released on Friday morning, Carrillo admitted to being involved in a collision but did not confirm if she was intoxicated at that time.

The full statement reads:

"Early this morning, I was involved in a traffic incident involving parked vehicles. Fortunately, no one was injured, and I have been cooperating with law enforcement. As a public servant, I am aware that I must meet a higher standard that demands personal accountability for my behavior, and I accept responsibility for my actions. I sincerely apologize to my family, constituents, colleagues, and staff for any actions of mine that have fallen short of that expectation. I intend to seek the necessary help and support. As I do so, I remain dedicated to my family, constituents, and the community I grew up in and am proud to represent."

LAPD issued a statement on Friday evening stating:

"The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of media reports focusing in part on cellphone video footage that captures what appears to be a portion of a DUI investigation involving Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo and the opportunity given her to complete a sobriety test in a location described as more private.

Chief Moore has ordered the local command to review the video recordings from officers' body cameras regarding the officers' actions, and at this time, the officers' actions do not appear to be inappropriate.

A critical aspect of a field sobriety test is providing a reasonable location for the person being examined to evaluate influence without obstruction or distraction.

The officers conducting the investigation have the discretion to conduct the test in a location that provides the fairest assessment of individuals objectively."

Carrillo was later released on Friday afternoon and has a court appearance scheduled for December 1st.
