J-1 Exchange Visitors

J-1 is a non-immigrant visa granted to visitors to the U.S. to assist visiting scholars who apply for this visa to come to the U.S. to conduct re-education, deliver academic lectures for academic communication, do research projects, and other academic exchange activities. The J1 visa can effectively promote the exchange and interaction between U.S. and world talents, and provides a good opportunity and platform for the integration of international academic circles and the interaction of knowledge, which also aims to cultivate talents in the fields of education, arts, and science.

The Visiting Scholars Program is hosted and sponsored by an institution designated by the Department of State. If you wish to participate in the J1 Visiting Scholar Exchange Program, you must first apply for the program with the above-mentioned institution. If you are eligible to participate in the program, the program sponsor will submit a subsequent application for you. The content of the exchange program, whether the specific applicant will be able to work in the U.S. and the specific benefits of coming to the U.S. are determined based on the exchange program’s sponsor.

There are many categories of J1 that provide exchange facilities for people in all academic fields and levels, including:

  • Visiting Professor and Scholar
  • Research Assistants
  • Students
  • Trainees
  • Trainers
  • Teachers
  • Specialists
  • Reciprocal Students (Live-in Exchange Students)
  • Summer Camp Counselors

It is important to note that, based on the requirements of the St, if a J1 visa is granted for a government-sponsored exchange program, a graduate medical exchange program, or a technical exchange program as listed on the Exchange Visitor Skills List 2009, the person must return to the host country for a period of 2 years after the completion of the exchange program. After 2 years, you are allowed to reapply for adjustment of status, or immigration, etc. However, if you meet the requirements for the exemption, you may apply for an exemption from the 2-year return limit.
