Highway 101 Ventura Accident:
An 88-year-old man driving the wrong way on Highway 101 in Ventura on Wednesday night suffered major injuries after crashing into the center median, authorities reported. The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. when several drivers began reporting a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes near the State Beaches ramp, close to Emma Wood State Beach, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The car, later identified as a 2017 Nissan Sentra, was seen traveling in the left lane and center median of the freeway. Minutes later, a collision was reported near the Oak Street onramp in Ventura.
CHP Officer Ryan Ayala stated that the driver, a man from Santa Fe Springs, was driving alone, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident. The driver crashed into the center median, and the car stopped in the left lane, according to a CHP news release issued Thursday.
A CHP officer and some good Samaritans began life-saving efforts at the scene. Ayala added that firefighters extricated the man from the vehicle, and he was taken to Ventura County Medical Center with major internal injuries.
The officer also noted that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The incident caused congestion in the northbound lanes for about an hour.
Despite the severity of the accident, authorities do not suspect that alcohol or drugs were factors in the incident.
