Fatal Accident on Highway 46:
A tragic accident occurred at 10:28 p.m. on eastbound Highway 46, west of West Centre Street in Shandon. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) report, a 2021 Mercedes driven by Saundra Foutz, 30, of Paso Robles, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane when it collided head-on with a driver traveling eastbound in a 2022 Honda.
A second Honda, traveling behind the first at approximately 65 mph, then collided with the vehicles involved in the initial crash.
Foutz sustained major injuries and was transported to CRMC Hospital in Fresno. Initially, officers at the scene did not expect Foutz to survive, but according to CHP Officer Patrick Seebart, she has since survived her injuries.
The driver and two passengers in the first Honda were fatally injured. The driver was a 24-year-old from Cutler, one passenger was a 32-year-old from Sanger, and another was a 27-year-old from Reedley. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of their families.
Carlos Quinonez, 28, of Orange Cove, a passenger in the first Honda, sustained major injuries and was transported to Sierra Vista Medical Center.
The driver of the second Honda, Jess Lopez, 38, of Bakersfield, sustained minor injuries and did not require medical treatment.
The CHP report states that impairment is not suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, and the CHP is working with the coroner’s office to confirm identities and notify the families of the deceased.
