A tragic incident occurred on Monday night on Whitewood Road in Murrieta, resulting in the death of 44-year-old Leny Palma Gaitan. Gaitan was struck by three vehicles while walking in the traffic lanes, outside of a pedestrian crosswalk. The incident took place on the southbound side of Whitewood, near Somers Road. Gaitan was pronounced dead at Wildomar's Inland Valley Hospital about 30 minutes after the crash.
The Murrieta Police Department conducted a preliminary investigation and found no evidence of excessive speed or driver impairment. However, they are working to determine if Gaitan was impaired at the time of the incident. The reason why Gaitan was walking in the roadway is currently unknown.
The county coroner's office identified Gaitan and police are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
