Fatal accident in Carlsbad:
CARLSBAD, Calif. — A pedestrian who was killed in a crash, in which the driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, has been identified. Karla Stephanie Levya, 23, died in a collision that occurred on Tuesday around 12:37 a.m. in the 2200 block of Las Palmas Drive, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
Levya had exited her vehicle after parking along Las Palmas Drive when the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta "failed to negotiate the curve" and struck both the victim and her vehicle, according to the medical officials' report.
First responders confirmed Levya's death at the scene, while the driver of the Volkswagen, identified as 26-year-old Jose Manuel Zambrano Cruz, fled the scene, according to authorities.
A witness informed the police that the Volkswagen was traveling eastbound on Las Palmas Drive at a high rate of speed before the crash.
Cruz was later located and arrested on suspicion of multiple felonies, including hit and run, driving under the influence causing death or injury, and vehicular manslaughter. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
