Death in Covina
The death of Diego Ciardullo, a 17-year-old from San Dimas who was struck by a Metrolink train near Covina last week, has left the community in shock.
According to the coroner's office, Ciardullo died on March 28 due to the traumatic injuries suffered in the accident, which occurred in the 1900 block of Covina Boulevard. The teenager, who was a student at Sierra Vista High School in Baldwin Park, was on his way home from school when the tragedy occurred.
California Highway Patrol authorities are investigating whether the use of headphones caused Ciardullo to be distracted and not notice the approaching train.
Officer Joseph Davila, a CHP spokesman, said the accident took place in an unincorporated area of the county, as Ciardullo was walking eastbound on Covina Boulevard and ended up colliding with the side of the moving train.
The news has deeply affected many in the community, and a family friend, Jenna Crofts, has created a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for Ciardullo's funeral expenses and support for his family.
As of Thursday morning, the page had raised $28,326, showing the impact the tragedy has had on the community.
