Accident in Carmel by the Sea

A 74-year-old woman was involved in a startling incident in Carmel when she crashed her Tesla into the United States Postal Service building. The accident occurred around 12:17 p.m. when the woman apparently confused the accelerator pedal with the brake while parked in a designated disabled spot in the off-street parking lot, directly in front of the main doors on 5th Avenue. According to police, the red Tesla became uncontrollable and traveled about 40 feet before impacting the building's main entrance. Fortunately, both the driver and a pedestrian who was crossing the pedestrian walkway at the time were uninjured. However, the front vestibule of the building sustained severe damage and had to be temporarily closed for safety reasons. Despite the impact, postal services were not completely disrupted, as people can still access the building using the Dolores Street entrance to pick up their packages. The driver was evaluated at the scene, and it was determined that alcohol was not involved in the incident. Additionally, police confirmed that the Tesla's autopilot function did not contribute to the accident. This incident highlights the importance of being attentive and focused while driving at all times, especially when maneuvering vehicles with advanced technology. Fortunately, in this case, the swift response of emergency services and the luck that no one was seriously injured prevented an even more dire situation.
