A man was hit and killed by a car after attempting to cross Highway 99 near Modesto on Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
CHP said the man ran from the east shoulder of Highway 99 near Hatch Road towards the center median and was struck by a Volvo sedan traveling north on the 99 around 3:30 p.m.
The man was pushing a bicycle across the highway when he ran "directly into the path of the Volvo," according to CHP.
The man was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Volvo was not injured in the crash.
Two lanes of the 99 were closed as the investigation began. The investigation is ongoing and CHP officials say they are unsure if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. No further information is available at this time.
