Tragedy in Fullerton
A woman from Anaheim, who was a passenger in an SUV, died when the SUV was rear-ended by a sedan while stopped at a stoplight in Fullerton early Monday morning, April 15, authorities said.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Harbor and Orangethorpe avenues around 12:10 a.m. and resulted in the death of a 62-year-old woman and two other drivers hospitalized, said Kristy Wells, a spokesperson for the Fullerton Police Department.
As of Tuesday afternoon, police had not announced any arrests or citations.
Investigators found that the driver of a BMW sedan, identified as a 25-year-old man from Anaheim, was traveling in the left lane southbound approaching the red light but failed to stop and rear-ended a Toyota Rav4 containing a driver and a passenger, Wells said. The force of the collision sent the BMW into the driver's side of a pickup truck in the adjacent lane.
The drivers of the Rav4 and the BMW were taken to area hospitals for treatment, Wells said. Their conditions are unknown.
The Rav4 passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, Wells said. Her identity was being withheld pending notification of her family.
The pickup truck driver was treated and released at the scene, Wells said.
Angel Allen, of Anaheim, told OnSceneTV that she was heading home and driving on Orangethorpe with her daughter after eating at a nearby restaurant when she saw the crash as she approached the intersection with Harbor Avenue.
Allen, who was still shaken as she spoke to the independent news service, said she saw the BMW hit a blue SUV, spinning it, then the BMW crashed into a pickup truck.
"I had to brake so hard that the seatbelt pulled me back," Allen said. "I was very scared."
Police were investigating whether speed or driving under the influence were factors in the crash, Wells said.
