Sacramento Freeway Crash
In a tragic incident on Sacramento's Highway 50, a mother is grieving the loss of her son while her daughter fights for her life after a freeway crash involving their vehicle.
Yari Quirarte, the mother, recounted the harrowing events that unfolded after a tire blew out on their black Toyota while traveling on the westbound lanes of Highway 50, just east of 65th Street, around 4:35 p.m. on a Sunday. Feeling unsafe with cars speeding past them, Quirarte decided to stand with her children, an 8-year-old boy named Alexander Cooper and a 9-year-old girl named Jasmine Cooper, in the construction zone in the freeway's center median.
As California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers responded to reports of the disabled vehicle obstructing the fast lane, tragedy struck. A 30-year-old man driving a Ford vehicle attempted to avoid the Toyota but ended up colliding with both children standing in the median. Alexander succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Jasmine sustained severe injuries and was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center.
Quirarte described the horrifying moment when the Ford vehicle approached them at high speed, leaving her frozen as her daughter was struck first, followed by her son. Alexander, remembered as a cheerful and helpful second-grader, tragically lost his life in the accident.
Details regarding whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash were not disclosed by authorities. Both drivers involved emerged uninjured.

Additionally, CHP spokesperson Mark Leavitt emphasized the importance of safety protocols for motorists stranded on freeways, advising them to attempt to exit the freeway if possible, move to the shoulder if not, and remain in their vehicles until help arrives.
