Deadly Hit-and-Run Incident
In San Francisco's South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood, tragedy struck as a pedestrian fell victim to a hit-and-run incident, causing road closures and widespread disruption on Thursday morning, as confirmed by authorities.
The incident occurred around 5 a.m. when law enforcement received reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian along the 500 block of Sixth Street. Upon reaching the scene, responders found the pedestrian critically injured and immediately administered first aid while requesting additional medical assistance. Despite their efforts, the pedestrian succumbed to their injuries, tragically pronounced dead at the site.
Police investigations revealed that the vehicle responsible for the collision fled the scene, compounding the severity of the situation. Consequently, Bryant and Sixth streets have been cordoned off to facilitate inquiries into this fatal crash. Authorities advise motorists to anticipate delays in the affected areas and consider alternate routes for their commute.
Regrettably, this marks the second fatal pedestrian accident of the year 2024 in San Francisco, amplifying concerns about road safety in the city. Just last week, another pedestrian lost their life in a separate incident near Golden Gate Park. In that case, a 63-year-old pedestrian was struck while crossing Fluton and Arguello by a driver who reportedly had the right of way. Although the driver remained at the scene, the potential for charges against them remains uncertain pending further investigation.
These tragic events underscore broader traffic safety challenges within San Francisco, with statistics indicating 25 fatalities resulting from traffic-related accidents in the city the previous year.
