Stolen Truck Leads to Heart-Pounding Chase

Ontario, California - February 2, 2024 - In a heart-pounding incident, Ontario Police apprehended Joshua Mikulay of Norwalk after he led officers on a dangerous pursuit through multiple streets, freeways, and two counties before crashing into the San Gabriel Riverbed. The incident unfolded on February 2, 2024, at approximately 4:13 P.M. when Ontario Police dispatch received a report of a stolen vehicle in the vicinity of Mission Blvd and Euclid Ave. The stolen vehicle, a Toyota pickup truck, had been reported stolen earlier in the day in the city of Tustin. Officers quickly located the vehicle at the AMPM gas station located at 1054 W. Mission Blvd, where the suspect, Joshua Mikulay, was in the midst of refueling. When an officer attempted to block the vehicle, instructing Mikulay to comply, the situation escalated. Ignoring commands, Mikulay jumped into the driver's seat and aggressively revved his engine toward the officer and his vehicle. Fortunately, the officer managed to safely maneuver away from the oncoming danger. However, Mikulay's reckless escape led to collisions with a bollard and two other vehicles before he sped away onto Mission Blvd. What followed was a harrowing 45-mile pursuit across surface streets, various freeways, and even crossing county lines. Mikulay reached speeds of up to 95 miles per hour, showing complete disregard for public safety as he ran red lights, ignored stop signs, and drove into oncoming traffic lanes. The Ontario Air Unit played a crucial role in tracking Mikulay, as his erratic driving made it challenging for pursuing officers to keep up. Eventually, Mikulay careened down an embankment beneath the 105 freeway and Hoxie Ave, entering the San Gabriel Riverbed before abandoning the stolen vehicle and fleeing on foot. Despite his efforts to evade capture, Mikulay was apprehended by Ontario Police Officers without further incident. He has since been booked into the West Valley Detention Center on multiple felony charges, including assault on a peace officer and felony evading while driving against traffic. At the time of his arrest, Mikulay was under Postrelease Community Supervision (PRCS) in Los Angeles County for a previous robbery conviction, underscoring his extensive criminal history and blatant disregard for community safety. Ontario Police are committed to collaborating with the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office to ensure that individuals who put their communities at risk are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Investigators are urging anyone who may have witnessed or been a victim of Mikulay during this incident to come forward and contact the Ontario Police Department at 909-986-6711.
