Collision on HWY 180 in Fresno County
A tragic accident that occurred early in the morning involving two vehicles, one of which was driven in the wrong direction, has left one man dead and another hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The CHP was alerted about a collision with injuries around 12:25 a.m. on Saturday on Highway 180, east of Armstrong Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a 2023 Honda Accord involved in a crash with a 2016 Buick Enclave.
According to investigators, the Honda, driven by 30-year-old Vikash Kumar, a Fresno resident, was apparently traveling east in the westbound lanes of Highway 180 before the collision. Kumar attempted to make a U-turn to correct his direction when his vehicle collided with the Buick.
The Buick, driven by a 33-year-old man from Madera, struck the passenger side of the Honda as he was unable to avoid the crash. In the incident, the passenger of the Honda was seriously injured, and investigators confirmed their fatality at the accident scene.
Both the driver of the Buick and his passenger, a 26-year-old woman from Sanger, were not taken to the hospital and informed the paramedics at the scene that they would seek medical attention on their own.
Kumar was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, but they are believed to be non-fatal, according to the CHP. Investigators have arrested Kumar on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter aggravated by driving under the influence of alcohol. Once discharged from the hospital, he will be booked into Fresno County Jail.
