A woman lost her life after being potentially ejected from her vehicle following a prolonged chase that culminated in a high-speed collision on the 5 Freeway on Wednesday afternoon.
The pursuit initiated when the Los Angeles Police Department started tailing what was reported as a stolen Honda CR-V around 1:45 p.m. near the eastbound 210 Freeway and Polk Street in Sylmar, according to police statements.
Approximately 45 minutes later, the female driver was navigating the northbound 5 Freeway near Castaic, at times reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph, with CHP officers in close pursuit.
In a desperate attempt to evade capture, the driver engaged in hazardous maneuvers, including a deceptive move where she feigned taking an exit only to sharply veer back onto the freeway, eluding the CHP officer momentarily. However, her flight came to a tragic end around 3 p.m. when she attempted to leave the southbound 5 Freeway.
It is believed she was ejected from the vehicle during the crash, a fact confirmed by the CHP, which also pronounced her dead at the scene.
The CHP, in a press briefing held late in the afternoon, expressed regret over the incident, stating, "Unfortunately, the vehicle was going too fast to manage the curve at the transition from the 5 South to the 138 and crashed. This is a deeply regrettable situation that we never wish to occur."
The chase did not result in any other injuries. The CHP Central Division along with the CHP’s Special Accident Investigation Unit is currently examining the details of the crash.
