Tragic accident in Modesto:
MODESTO, Calif. — A man died, and an 11-month-old baby was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a traffic accident Saturday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The accident, involving five vehicles, occurred around 1 p.m. on Highway 132 near River Road.
The deceased, a 26-year-old man from Ceres, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the preliminary CHP report, the man was driving eastbound when, for unknown reasons, he veered left, crossing the double yellow lines into the opposite lane. His vehicle sideswiped one car before crashing head-on into another car in the opposing lane. The car that was struck head-on immediately braked, but another vehicle rear-ended it.
In addition to the fatality, an 11-month-old baby traveling in one of the other vehicles was transported to the hospital with major injuries. Four other individuals involved in the crash sustained minor injuries, according to CHP.
Authorities closed Highway 132 between River Road and Gates Road for several hours to conduct an investigation, reopening the road around 3:10 p.m. It has not yet been determined if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
CHP took the opportunity to remind parents and caregivers that, according to state law, children under the age of two must ride in a rear-facing car seat.
