Tragic accident in Cambria:

A 16-year-old boy lost his life in a late-night accident on Highway 1 near Cambria on Saturday. According to a statement from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Eric Aguilar left his home in San Simeon around 9 p.m., driving his father’s truck. The boy's destination was unknown. After his departure, Aguilar's family went searching for him and the truck but could not locate them. The CHP mentioned that the truck might have been taken without the owner's permission. On Sunday morning, emergency responders received reports of a vehicle possibly having gone off the side of Highway 1, north of Burton Drive in Cambria. The vehicle ended up about 100 feet down an embankment, where it could not be seen from the road. When emergency crews arrived, Aguilar’s family had already reached the scene and found the crash. According to the CHP, the truck had hit several trees as it left the road, resulting in “significant damage to the vehicle and fatal injuries to the driver.” It is unclear what time the crash occurred, though it is presumed to have happened late Saturday evening. The CHP said that speed appeared to be the main cause of the accident, although it is unknown if alcohol, drugs, or distracted driving played a role. The crash remains under investigation, and witnesses are asked to contact the CHP at 805-400-6720 or 805-593-3333.
