Authorities in San Diego responded to a tragic hit-and-run incident on southbound State Route 163 (SR-163) near downtown San Diego on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. when a man was walking within the traffic lanes of southbound SR-163, north of Interstate 5. He was hit by an unknown vehicle, and despite efforts by first responders, he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene heading southbound on SR-163.
Upon arrival, officers found the pedestrian in the center median. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) temporarily blocked off two right lanes of southbound SR-163 into downtown and diverted motorists to the northbound and southbound Interstate 5.
A toxicology report is pending to determine if the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash. Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the CHP San Diego Area at 858-293-6000.
