Tragedy on I-805, San Diego County
A pedestrian was fatally struck by multiple vehicles on Interstate 805 northbound, near Kearny Mesa, as confirmed by the California Highway Patrol to FOX 5. All lanes in the area were closed during Monday morning.
The incident was reported around 5:13 a.m., just south of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. According to the California Highway Patrol, the pedestrian was hit multiple times and died at the accident scene.
The drivers of all vehicles involved in the incident stopped and authorities are not considering the incident as a hit-and-run case.
Details on why the pedestrian was on the freeway are unclear at this time, as it did not appear to have come from any nearby vehicle. His identity has not yet been determined by authorities.
A Traffic Alert (SigAlert) was issued for the highway prior to the Monday morning commute due to significant delays. After the collision, traffic was reduced to a single lane near the edge of I-805 in Kearny Mesa.
In a post on X, Caltrans San Diego reported that lane No. 4 reopened just before 9 a.m., slightly improving traffic flow as the morning rush hour waned. All lanes reopened at 10:45 a.m.
While the lanes were blocked, FOX 5's Commuter Carl observed vehicles backing up to Adams Avenue near North Park.
FOX 5 spoke with California Highway Patrol Sergeant Robert Holtz after Monday morning's fatal accident, who wanted to remind drivers to drive with caution as the holiday travel season intensifies.
"I want to remind people during the holiday season to drive slowly, be careful, wear seat belts, and follow traffic laws," Holtz said. "They are there for a reason: to keep people safe."
No additional details about the collision are immediately available. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
