Tragedy in Santa Cruz
On Friday night, the quiet coastal town of Santa Cruz was rocked by a tragedy that left the community in shock. It all began when a driver lost their life in an accident while driving their SUV off West Cliff Drive. The vehicle plunged from the roadway, crashing into rocks before submerging into the ocean waters. The clock read around 8:45 p.m. when the fatal incident occurred, which took place near the intersection of West Cliff Drive and De La Costa Avenue.
The sequence of events started when a state park officer attempted to stop traffic for a 1996 GMC Yukon. The California Highway Patrol revealed that the reason behind the stop was the vehicle's expired registration and the imminent danger it posed by nearly backing into a crowd at Natural Bridges State Beach, a popular spot among both locals and tourists alike.
Amidst the situation, a California State Parks vehicle joined in the pursuit of the SUV. However, under circumstances still unknown, the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading the SUV to veer off the road and plummet off the cliff.
Emergency response was immediate from Santa Cruz rescue teams. Both police and firefighters arrived at the scene of the accident, deploying efforts to extract the occupant from the vehicle. Tragically, all rescue attempts proved futile, as police confirmed the driver had succumbed to the impact.
Currently, the identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification to their closest relatives. The city of Santa Cruz, known for its coastal beauty and relaxed atmosphere, mourns today for the loss of one of its residents.
