Two teenagers from Person County died in an accident near Roxboro that also left three other young people injured early Saturday morning, according to authorities.
The single-vehicle crash was reported just before 1:20 a.m. along Shiloh Church Road, near Dorothy Brooks Lane, which is about three miles north of Roxboro, according to Sergeant Colby Rice of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred when the 18-year-old driver of a 2008 Hyundai Sonata veered left of the center line, went off the road, and collided with a tree "at a high speed," according to a report filed by Rice.
The car was traveling at 75 mph just before the accident, which is 30 mph above the posted speed limit of 45 mph in the two-lane stretch of the road where the crash occurred, according to officials.
The passengers, 17-year-old Jordan Humphrey and Isaac Bowen, whose age was not provided by authorities, both from Roxboro, died in the accident, according to Rice.
Two other passengers, a teenage girl and a teenage boy, were taken to Duke Hospital in Durham for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to the highway patrol. The driver also received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Rice.
The highway patrol's report indicated that at least one of the teenagers in the accident was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, but it is not known if the other occupants were wearing seatbelts.
Officials said alcohol is suspected to have been a contributing factor in the accident. No charges have been filed, but the highway patrol said they plan to meet with the district attorney to discuss possible charges.
