Tragedy in Pomona
A 6-year-old girl was identified on Wednesday after being struck and killed in an accident in Pomona, which left her 19-year-old sister seriously injured while they were walking home with their mother. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Department released the name of Guadalupe Alvarez Salgado after confirming her death.
The tragic accident occurred around 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Towne and Lexington Avenues, according to the Pomona Police Department. The mother and her two daughters were returning home from a store and were crossing the intersection at the time of the incident, according to a friend who lives with the family. Mireya Alvarez and her younger sister, known as "Lupita" to her loved ones, were walking just ahead of their mother when they were struck by the vehicle, the friend said.
Responding officers found the two pedestrians lying in the road with severe injuries. The 19-year-old victim was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive, but first responders were unable to save the child. The driver who hit them remained at the scene, which was just steps from the victims' home. The driver cooperated with the investigation, according to police. No arrests were made.
