Tragedy in Montara
A man was reported dead at the scene after his car went off a cliff and plunged 200 feet at Gray Whale Cove in Montara early Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Officers from multiple agencies responded to the area near Highway 1 around 1 p.m. on Thursday and attempted to reach the vehicle by descending the cliff and lowering an officer from a helicopter, according to videos shared by Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit on their social media platforms.
The car's only occupant was the driver. The driver's identity has not been disclosed at this time.
The incident closed traffic on the highway in both directions for hours as rescue teams worked at the scene. The exact cause of the accident is unknown, and authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the details.
