A man from southwestern Missouri has been charged with murder in an accident that claimed the lives of three people from Texas.
Steven Jordan, a resident of Republic, Missouri, is currently being held in jail without bail. Authorities claim that his blood alcohol level was more than two and a half times the legal limit.
The fatal accident occurred on January 20, 2023, on James River Freeway in Springfield, Missouri.
According to court documents, calls started coming in around 1:00 am reporting a white Dodge truck traveling westward in the wrong lanes. An officer spotted the truck and headed towards it, eventually noticing the taillights disappearing. The officer saw a large cloud of smoke or dust, approached, and realized that the truck had collided with another vehicle.
The truck had crashed into a Ford Expedition, which was carrying the driver and seven passengers.
Three out of the eight occupants of the Ford died. The other five suffered injuries of varying degrees of severity, as stated in the court documents.
Authorities identified the driver of the truck as Steven Alan Jordan, from Republic, Missouri.
The police stated that Jordan's blood alcohol level was 0.211. Authorities tested him two hours after the accident due to his injuries. His blood alcohol level was more than two and a half times the legal limit of 0.08.
The Springfield Police Department released the names of the victims on social media:
"Sharon Farmer (69 years old, from Pittsburg, TX), Ukena Farmer (45 years old, from Dallas, TX), and Stephen Figgins (61 years old, from Missouri City, TX) were pronounced dead at the scene of the car accident this morning."
The Texas family was on their way to St. Robert to attend a funeral.
