Tragedy in Fresno:
Three people died in a tragic car accident in Fresno County, California, early Friday morning. The crash occurred just before 2:45 a.m. at the intersection of Kearney and Garfield. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), 25-year-old Dario Ureña was driving east on Kearney when he lost control of the vehicle, veering off the road and crashing into a palm tree. The car caught fire upon impact, trapping all three occupants: Ureña, 21-year-old Syrus Suniga, and 27-year-old Joey Suniga Jr. They were all pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. CHP Officer Mike Salas stated that it was a "preventable accident" where alcohol likely played a key role.
This accident brought painful memories for Faith Koretoff, whose sister was killed on the same road, known for being dangerous. Koretoff has been advocating for safety improvements on the road ever since, wondering how many more lives need to be lost before changes are made, such as adding stop signs in both directions.
Residents living along this historic road, often used by drivers trying to avoid Highway 180, have also expressed concern. According to Koretoff, drivers frequently exceed speed limits, and she has witnessed "near-miss accidents" daily during her 50 years living in the area.
While many are calling for more traffic enforcement and additional stop signs, authorities say that most drivers travel the road safely, and crashes occur when drivers become a danger.
