Tragedy in Fresno, California
Loved ones are remembering a couple who died in a car accident in northeast Fresno on Friday night.
Authorities reported that 50-year-old cardiologist Alfred Valles and his 46-year-old wife Selina Valles died at the scene of the accident on Friant Road, near Champlain Drive.
"The way she carried herself was so touching. I'm going to cry because I miss her now. She gave so much," said Mary Melhorn.
Sisters Mary Melhorn and Alice Urrita are remembering their friend Selina.
"According to a witness, it seems that the vehicle was traveling at high speed northbound on Friant, just north of Champagne, when it crashed into a tree," said Lieutenant Henry García of the Fresno Police Department.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the couple's car destroyed.
The two sisters are still in shock over the news.
They met Selina when they put their mother in hospice care a couple of years ago.
Feeling overwhelmed by the care of their mother, the sisters said Selina was a light during such a dark time.
"Selina came in, took my mom outside, and I don't know what she said, but my mom came back into the house. I shared it with you, and she said, let's gather all the girls. Let's work together. We have another sister. And it was just the stress of what we were going through just went away with her."
During the time Selina spent with the family, the sisters said she always spoke highly of her husband, Alfred.
Alfred was a beloved cardiologist in the Fresno community. His employer, The Heart Group Cardiovascular Associates, issued a statement that reads in part:
"With great sadness, we share the tragic news of the devastating loss of Alfred G. Valles. Dr. Valles was a respected and esteemed member of our practice. Please join us in prayer for this precious family and all who have been shattered by this tragedy."
Colleagues said he was a one-of-a-kind physician.
"He was very kind; he had a warm heart. He knew how to connect with people on a personal level," said Dr. Shaukat Ali.
He shared that Alfred always encouraged his colleagues with positivity. And the doctor's passing will leave a big impact on the community.
"I feel like this will be a great loss for the Fresno community. He was always excited about his work and always came to work with a lot of energy," said Dr. Ali.
