Tragedy in Crescent City, California
A deputy sheriff from northern California was found dead in her home, and subsequently her boyfriend was arrested in Oregon on suspicion of murdering her, according to authorities.
The body of Deputy Deanna Esmaeel was discovered on Thursday at her residence in Crescent City, on the California coast, as reported by the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office in a statement.
An arrest warrant was issued for Daniel James Walter, who was last seen near Esmaeel's house on the day of the murder. Authorities in Curry County, Oregon, found Walter's black Mazda sedan on Friday and arrested him shortly thereafter, according to officials.
It was not mentioned if the 54-year-old suspect had a lawyer, and contact information for Walter could not be found on Sunday.
Esmaeel was the mother of actor Marty York, best known for his role in the 1993 movie "The Sandlot". According to SF Gate, Esmaeel worked as an animal trainer on movie sets for decades before transitioning to law enforcement in 2021.
York wrote on Instagram on Friday that he had been informed about his mother's death.
"The emotions I'm feeling right now are terrible, between anger, revenge, and crying," York said.
Walter was charged in March with unauthorized entry into a residence, according to Del Norte County court records obtained by SF Gate. It is unclear whose home he is alleged to have illegally entered.
Del Norte County Sheriff Garrett Scott expressed his condolences for the loss of one of his deputies.
"Our hearts and prayers are with her family, friends, and colleagues," Scott said in a statement.
