A mother and her eight-year-old twin daughters tragically lost their lives in a fatal car accident that occurred in Cranbrook, British Columbia. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the British Columbia Highway Patrol (BCHP) responded to a report of a collision involving two passenger vehicles and a commercial vehicle on Highway 3/93, located approximately 20 kilometers east of Cranbrook.
Upon initial investigation of the accident, it was determined that a truck carrying logs was traveling westbound on Highway 3/93 when it experienced a mechanical failure that caused it to cross the center line into eastbound traffic, where it collided with a Chevrolet Suburban. A third vehicle was also involved, which made evasive maneuvers and went off the road.
"Tragically, all three occupants of the Chevrolet Suburban were declared dead at the scene of the accident and the driver of the log truck was taken to the hospital with serious injuries," stated the RCMP in a press release.
Following the accident, Highway 3/93 was temporarily closed for investigation, but was eventually reopened later that same evening. The British Columbia Highway Patrol in Cranbrook has taken over the investigation and is asking anyone with dashcam footage to contact them at 250-420-4244.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched for the family who lost their lives in the accident, which has already raised over $60,000, surpassing its $10,000 goal. "On June 1, 2023, the loving and devoted father, Matt Johnson, lost his twin eight-year-old daughters, Taylor and Hailey, in a tragic accident in Jaffray while they were on their way to school that morning," says the GoFundMe page. "As one can imagine, this has been an absolutely devastating and heart-wrenching loss for Matt, the family, and the communities of Jaffray and Cranbrook."
