Tragedy in Auburn:
A woman died after losing control of her vehicle late Wednesday night and crashing into the concrete post of a bridge near Interstate 80 in Auburn, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The single-vehicle crash was initially reported around 11:50 p.m. to the CHP as an incident involving a semi-truck and a pedestrian in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Highway 49. However, the CHP confirmed that neither a semi-truck nor a pedestrian was involved in the crash.
Officers who arrived at the scene discovered that the woman was driving a silver Acura MDX and lost control of her vehicle for unknown reasons. According to a Thursday morning news release from CHP Auburn, the Acura struck the center divider and then a concrete post of the Nevada Street bridge. The CHP also reported that the Acura’s driver, who was not wearing her seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle as it continued to move along the center divider for several hundred feet.
"While mechanical failure is not suspected, it is still unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in this incident," the CHP said in the news release. "The CHP is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision."
The Placer County Coroner’s Office was expected to release the name of the driver after her family was notified.
