Terrifying accident in South Los Angeles
A low-quality surveillance video is the only lead authorities have as they search for the driver who struck a motorcyclist in South Los Angeles and left him to die at the scene.
On November 7th, 37-year-old father Miguel Urias was riding on Manchester Boulevard when the accident occurred. He was on his way home after visiting his mother's house.
"I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, he was someone special," said Diana Román Sáenz, Urias' wife. According to Urias' family, the driver did not stop and the father died at the accident site.
"I want to say they took a good person," said Román Sáenz as a message to the driver, who remains at large. "Driving so recklessly and taking someone else's life is not fair. They should turn themselves in."
Amy Román, Urias' sister-in-law, shares the same sentiment.
"You just hope that the person who did it... accidents happen... just stops," she said. "They let him die. He died. Thanks to the good Samaritan who stopped and called 911, because otherwise, he would have died alone."
Urias' two children, aged 13 and 9, have been struggling in the four weeks since their father's loss.
"The thirteen-year-old... keeps a lot to himself," said Román Sáenz. "I think he still believes this is a dream. My daughter, she's 9. She cries. She cries and asks for him."
And she's not alone.
"I'm still waiting to hear the motorcycle, to hear him come through the door. Hear him say goodnight and hug me, you know? Kiss our children," said Román Sáenz.
The sisters spent Tuesday afternoon posting signs along Manchester Boulevard, asking for help. The family has hired attorney Matt Zar, who informed ABC7 that the fleeing driver is likely a woman in her 20s driving an older dark-colored Dodge Charger.
"We have part of the license plate, it starts with an 8, ends in 234, that's what we have," said Zar. "Those are small pieces of the puzzle, and we hope people can help us find the rest."
Meanwhile, Urias' family is left to pick up the pieces.
"I've been trying to stay strong for them, but I really want to push and find this person," said the victim's wife. "I can't just sit and do nothing. He didn't deserve to die like this."
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe has been set up to help Urias' family.
