Four children were airlifted to hospitals while another was transported by land after being hit by a van while crossing a pedestrian crossing in Pollock Pines, California, on Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The accident occurred at the marked pedestrian crossing on Pony Express Trail near Oak Street around 10:42 a.m. There are no traffic lights or stop signs at this pedestrian crossing.
The person who manages the commercial strip on the street where a Montessori school is located confirmed to KCRA 3 that all the children were students of the school. The school serves students up to 6 years old.
Pine Top Montessori issued a statement on Thursday morning regarding the accident, which said, "At Pine Top Montessori, the well-being of every child in our care is our top priority. We consider all our students as part of our family. Our hearts and prayers are with all our families, and we send our prayers for their speedy recovery. We maintain close communication with authorities and parents to address the issue. To ensure the safety of all children, we respectfully request that only parents and their children visit our facilities."
The 21-year-old driver of a Ford E-150 van stayed at the scene and is cooperating, according to the CHP. At this time, alcohol, drugs, or excessive speed are not suspected factors in the accident.
Andrew Burnett of the CHP said investigators are looking into whether distracted driving played a role in the accident. He described the vehicle involved as an appliance repair van.
The CHP said two of the children, a boy and a girl, were taken to UC Davis Medical Center with serious injuries. A spokesperson did not share details about their condition.
One child was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with serious injuries, while another boy and girl were taken to Marshall Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the CHP.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said on social media that parents picking up their children near the site of the accident should park at the nearby Safeway and speak to a deputy at the scene.
