Serious Accident on Highway 101:
On Saturday night, a big-rig driver sustained critical injuries in a crash on Highway 101 on the Gaviota Coast, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. The accident occurred around 8 p.m. in the southbound lanes south of Tajiguas, as reported by Fire Captain Mike Gray.
The semi-truck lost control, overturned, and came to rest on its side in the center median, partially blocking the left-hand lane. The driver suffered major injuries and was transported by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
Approximately 20 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the truck following the crash. Due to the risk of the fuel reaching the ocean, State Fish & Wildlife and U.S. Coast Guard personnel were alerted.
One southbound lane was expected to remain closed for several hours after the crash, which is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.
