Serious Accident in Irvine:
An accident on Thursday night on a highway in Orange County resulted in the hospitalization of eight firefighters after a fire truck rolled over. The incident took place in Irvine on the 241 toll road near SR-133, shortly before 7 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Authorities reported that the fire truck, which was returning from battling the Airport Fire in Trabuco Canyon, swerved to avoid a ladder that had fallen on the road. The maneuver caused the truck to crash into a guardrail and overturn. Eight firefighters were inside the truck at the time.
Six firefighters sustained critical injuries, while two others suffered minor injuries, according to the CHP. All were transported to local trauma centers and hospitals for emergency treatment. The firefighters involved were part of the Santiago Hand Crew from the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA).
Brian Fennessy, the OCFA Fire Chief, asked for prayers for the firefighters and their families, stating that the road to recovery would be long for many of them. The families of all those affected had been notified.
The northbound lanes of the 241 highway and the on-ramps to SR-133 were closed as crews worked to clear the debris from the scene.
