Santee Scare
A deputy from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO) was involved in a collision on Monday in Santee, California, following an attempted escape by a detained woman who was in the backseat of the law enforcement vehicle.
The incident took place around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Mission Gorge Road and North Magnolia Avenue, as reported by Lt. David Ladieu from SDSO in a news release.
According to authorities, the initial situation involved a deputy transporting the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Juliette Espinoza, from Alvarado Hospital Medical Center in the College area to the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility. During the commute, Espinoza made an aggressive move to free herself, managing to unbuckle her seat belt and began kicking the rear passenger window in an attempt to escape custody.
In response, the deputy activated his vehicle's emergency equipment to expedite the return to Las Colinas. Unfortunately, during the pursuit, the law enforcement vehicle collided with a black Honda while making a turn onto Mission Gorge Road.
Fortunately, the deputy did not sustain any injuries in the collision. However, Espinoza was transported to a hospital due to complaints of pain but was released shortly after with no reported injuries. The driver of the Honda was also uninjured, although the passenger in the Honda suffered a leg abrasion.
Before the collision occurred, Espinoza had been booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility on drug-related charges. Following the crash, she faced an additional charge for attempting to escape.
