In Oakley, California, a police officer was injured following a head-on collision with a car that had been reported stolen, during a pursuit on Saturday evening. The incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. near East Cypress Road, as Oakley Police were in search of the stolen vehicle.
The car, driven by 29-year-old Devon Singleton, was aggressively fleeing along Jersey Island Road when officers attempted to slow it down using spike strips. Despite the tires deflating, Singleton continued to drive at high speeds, according to police reports.
Accompanying Singleton in the car was an unnamed female passenger.
As Singleton maneuvered the car erratically, two police officers, including a sergeant, were stationed near a Valero gas station at the intersection of East Cypress Road and Knightsen Avenue. The sergeant, aiming to protect both the traffic in the vicinity and the gas station's patrons, positioned himself strategically to intercept Singleton.
The ensuing collision was direct and forceful, momentarily trapping the sergeant inside his vehicle. However, he managed to extricate himself, apprehend Singleton, and take him into custody.
Following the crash, the sergeant was transported to a local hospital, treated for his injuries, and released a few hours later. Oakley Police Chief Paul Beard expressed his gratitude for the sergeant's expected full recovery and praised the community and his team's support during the incident.
Singleton, after receiving medical attention for his injuries, was arrested and faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, and felony evading.
The female passenger was also hospitalized; her condition and potential charges remain undisclosed.
In a related event, another individual was arrested for impaired driving in the vicinity, as police were securing the crash site.
