A driver was declared dead after a crash between two vehicles on Wednesday afternoon on Route 236, which is believed to be related to a medical event, according to the police.
Kittery Police Chief Robert Richter said that a 59-year-old man from Lee, New Hampshire, was declared deceased after the accident at the intersection of Route 236 and Stevenson Road. His identity was not immediately revealed.
Police and city firefighters were called at 4:17 p.m. on Wednesday. A 2005 Mercury Mountaineer towing a boat and trailer, and a 2021 Chevrolet truck, collided head-on in the eastbound lanes, according to the police.
Although neither vehicle suffered major damage, Kittery police found the driver of the Mercury unconscious and unresponsive at the wheel.
"The man was removed from the vehicle and officers began CPR and rescue measures," a Kittery police press release said. "Upon arrival, Kittery Fire Department personnel and Stewart (Service) ambulance took over treatment of the individual."
The man was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he was declared dead.
Preliminary investigation by emergency services indicates that the Lee resident suffered a medical event while driving, causing him to cross lanes and crash into the Chevrolet, according to the police.
"At this time, the driver's death is believed to have been caused by the medical event and not by injuries sustained in the actual crash," Kittery police said.
The driver of the Chevrolet truck was not injured, according to the police.
Kittery police continue to investigate the accident with the assistance of the York Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team.
This death is the second fatal accident in Kittery in two weeks. On Wednesday, May 17, a 74-year-old Kittery resident died after a medical event caused his car to crash into another near the York city line on Route 1. The driver of the second vehicle in that crash was not injured.
