A terrifying incident unfolded in Fontana when a driver's car failed to respond to the brakes, prompting her to call the police. The incident took place on Sunday, as reported by the Fontana Police Department.
The driver, identified as Alexis, spoke to Eyewitness News and shared her experience. She mentioned that she had just fueled up her car and was preparing to enter the highway when her car refused to stop.
In an audio recording of her 911 call, the panicking driver can be heard explaining that her Chevrolet Suburban from 1947 was rolling uncontrollably, running red lights, and she didn't know what to do.
"I'm in a 1947 Chevy Suburban and I can't brake or do anything. I'm going through all the red lights, and I don't know what to do!" she exclaimed in the recording.
Once she made the call, the operator guided her through the situation and stayed on the line with her until a police officer arrived to assist her.
According to the police department, the officer managed to position his vehicle in front of the antique car in an attempt to stop it.
"He got in front of me and brake-checked me, and he told me to hold on tight. I was in the car with my dog, by the way. So, I held onto the steering wheel and him... and suddenly, I crashed into him hard!" Alexis recounted.
The officer successfully halted the car before it collided with a heavily trafficked construction zone.
Alexis stated that she was in shock, and the first thing the officer did upon exiting the vehicle was to embrace her.
"I was trembling a lot, and he asked me, 'Are you okay?' and I replied, 'Yes, I don't need medical attention. Are you okay? I crashed into you!'" she recalled.
"I felt really bad. I was truly terrified," she added.
In the end, the car sustained some damage, but fortunately, nobody was injured.
The Fontana Police praised the swift action taken by all parties involved in the incident.
