SAN BENITO COUNTY, Calif.— The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that a portion of the road north of Hollister was closed after two big rigs collided on Monday at 9:56 a.m. The accident occurred on Highway 25, which was shut down between Bolsa Road and Shore Road while investigations were carried out and the road was cleared. According to the California Department of Transportation, the highway was fully reopened at 3:47 p.m. CHP confirmed that at least one person died in the crash. Preliminary details indicate that a 70-year-old man from San Jose was driving a 2017 Freightliner Cascadia at around 60 mph northbound on Highway 25. At the same time, a 2022 Mack Anthem was traveling southbound at approximately 40 mph. The Freightliner driver crossed the double yellow line and collided head-on with the Mack truck. The impact was so severe that the Freightliner driver was ejected from his vehicle as he was not wearing a seatbelt, sustaining major injuries. He was later transported to Santa Clara Medical Center.
