Fatal Accident in Moss Landing:
A tragic series of multiple crashes occurred early Friday morning on Highway 1, near Moss Landing, resulting in three people being hospitalized and the highway being closed in Monterey County for nearly four hours. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Jimmy Cruz, a 24-year-old resident of Salinas, was driving southbound when he veered into the oncoming lane and crashed head-on into a black Honda driven by Janeth Balianmachain, a 44-year-old from Marina. The first crash was reported around 4:20 a.m.
After the accident, Cruz exited his vehicle and began walking in the northbound lane, where he was struck by a white Acura. Cruz sustained major injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital along with Balianmachain and the driver of the Acura. Authorities initially arrested Cruz for driving under the influence (DUI), but he was later released to receive medical treatment at the hospital. Tragically, Cruz died from his injuries.
The accident led to the closure of Highway 1 for nearly four hours while CHP investigators conducted their work at the scene. This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers of driving under the influence and the need for extra caution on the road.
