Crash on Highway 65
A man died, and three people were injured in a head-on collision Wednesday afternoon on Highway 65, just south of Sherwood Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The three-vehicle accident was reported around 6:22 p.m. According to the CHP statement, the incident occurred when the driver of a Toyota attempted to overtake northbound traffic using the southbound lane. This maneuver resulted in a head-on collision with a Dodge traveling south. Both vehicles veered off the road and came to a stop on an embankment.
A third vehicle was also involved in the accident, colliding with the Toyota after the initial impact. The force of the collision left at least two people trapped inside the damaged vehicles.
The Toyota driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Toyota and the Dodge driver sustained severe injuries and were immediately transported to Kern Medical for treatment. The driver of the third vehicle involved was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
The accident caused a complete blockage of all lanes of Highway 65 just south of Sherwood Avenue from the time of the crash until shortly after 10 p.m. when the lanes were reopened.
