Crash in Oakland following theft in Napa
Four individuals were arrested after a car connected to a theft at a Lululemon store in Napa was pursued and crashed in Oakland. Napa police reported that the thieves had approximately $2,500 worth of stolen merchandise. The Napa police were alerted to the theft around 4 p.m. When they located the suspect vehicle, a Lexus GS 350, they attempted to stop it. However, the vehicle fled, leading to a pursuit.
Napa police stated that they handed over control of the pursuit to the California Highway Patrol near the Carquinez Bridge. The pursuit led law enforcement to the East Bay.
Oakland police were notified just after 4:30 p.m. of a vehicle in their area connected to a crime in another city. The Oakland Police Department stated that they assisted the California Highway Patrol in this incident.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the theft took place at a retail store and that it was the police who initially pursued the vehicle.
The California Highway Patrol deployed an aircraft to assist in the pursuit by tracking the vehicle. Highway patrol officers stated in their preliminary press release that the suspect vehicle traveled on Interstate 80 near Carson in Richmond. With the aircraft overhead, the California Highway Patrol said ground units backed off. Despite not being pursued, the suspect vehicle continued to drive recklessly, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed at the intersection of Lakeshore Avenue and Beacon Street in Oakland. Officers took four occupants from the car into custody. Napa police stated that the suspects are cleared for booking.
Authorities did not indicate whether the occupants of the vehicle were injured in the crash.
The California Highway Patrol stated that the Oakland Police Department is leading the crash investigation.
