Crash in Nevada City:

Two Northern California police officers were injured early Sunday after being struck by a suspected drunk driver. The officers had just arrived at the scene to assist a motorist who had hit a bear on Highway 49, near Nevada City, about 55 miles northeast of Sacramento. The back-to-back crashes occurred around 12:30 a.m. Sunday at the Highway 49 on-ramp near Broad Street. A motorist had struck and killed a bear, which was partially blocking the roadway. The driver was uninjured but his vehicle was heavily damaged and still on the road, according to Nevada City police in a statement posted on YubaNet.com. Geoffrey Rodgers, 28, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was taken to Nevada County jail, though according to jail records, he was no longer in custody by Monday. The injured officers are recovering from their injuries, and further investigation is expected to determine the exact circumstances of the crash. The incident has raised concerns about the dangers of driving under the influence and the presence of wildlife on the region’s roads.
