Collision on Highway 65

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) issued a statement following the tragic death of Arturo Luis Garcia, a young 22-year-old corrections officer from Porterville, who died in a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 65, south of Sherwood Avenue, on May 29, 2024. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, around 6:22 p.m., officers responded to the scene of the accident on Highway 65, south of Sherwood Avenue. According to the CHP's preliminary investigation, the driver of a Toyota, identified as Garcia, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 65 in an attempt to overtake northbound traffic. In his attempt to pass, he collided head-on with an oncoming car, resulting in a multi-vehicle accident. The coroner officially identified Arturo Luis Garcia on May 30. Garcia had begun his career as a corrections officer in November 2023 and was assigned to Salinas Valley State Prison in March 2024, according to the CDCR's statement. Despite his short career, it was marked by a commitment to safety and rehabilitation within California's prison system. The Porterville community and his colleagues at Salinas Valley State Prison are mourning the loss of a dedicated and promising young officer. The CDCR highlighted his dedication and deeply regretted his passing, extending condolences to Garcia's family and friends. The accident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers that can arise on the roads and the importance of road safety. The investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident is ongoing, and authorities are working to clarify all the details that led to this tragedy.
