A Person Died in Single-Car Accident
A tragic incident unfolded on Highway 156 near Monterey Road in San Juan Bautista, California, as the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the death of a woman from Castroville in a single-vehicle crash. The driver, who sustained moderate injuries, was transported to Natividad Medical Center.
The CHP's preliminary investigation suggests that alcohol and/or drug use may have played a role in the accident, with the driver subsequently being taken into custody.
The sequence of events, as outlined by the CHP, indicates that at approximately 1:55 p.m. on February 6, a 2005 Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on Hwy 156.
The vehicle, reportedly traveling at 70 miles per hour in wet conditions, lost control after encountering standing water on the roadway. Subsequently, the car veered off the south road edge, overturned, and collided with a tree along an embankment, ultimately coming to a rest on its roof about 35 feet below.
Tragically, the 25-year-old passenger sustained fatal blunt force injuries upon impact with the tree and was pronounced dead at the scene by fire department personnel at 2:12 p.m.
The CHP has initiated an investigation into the incident and is seeking any additional information from the public. Officer Mendonca from the Hollister-Gilroy Area CHP office can be contacted at 408-427-0700.
